Need to replace 30 y/o Purex Mini-Max 400,000 BTU natural gas pool heater. My pool/spa is about 38×19 freeform shaped. The hook-up is on the left. Deciding between Hayward or Pentair. I realize Pentair bought out Purex. Your thoughts? Best price? How much for professional installation? My pool man can’t do it, and I don’t want to get ripped off. I also understand that SoCal Gas will offer a rebate. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Former Bruin family as well.

Why do you not consider Raypak? I have installed their Natural Gas Pool Heater Cupro-nickel Ray 300.000 BTU. It has a compact design and weather-resistant galvanized body. It uses a lot of gas, but it has a digital thermometer, so you need to control it manually. Many experts consider this heater the best one.

I have read many negative reviews about this heater. Mainly because it requires regular replacements of broken parts. Also, how much do you spend on heating the pool?

@markus89 I’m afraid I have to disagree with this comment. I have had my Raypack for three years. I only change the o-rings on the piping. No major repairs so far. Recently, I spent $300 in March heating my pool. I live in South Carolina.
